The Iowa Great Places staff would like to announce some additional information for our first-annual Awards and Recognition Dinner to be held on October 16th, 2009, at the State Historical Building in Des Moines. The dinner and ceremony will recognize the newly designated Great Places of 2009, the three Pilot Places that have completed their designation periods, the Great Places coaches from state departments, and a number of outstanding local projects and volunteers from all our Great Places. Governor Culver and Lt. Governor Judge have been invited to attend the ceremony to recognize all of these accomplishments and to recognize the newly designated Great Places.
Tickets for the dinner will cost $25 and are available through IowaTix.com now.
RSVP’s for the dinner must be sent by October 9, 2009.
The University of Nebraska-Omaha recently published an article on the Kerrey Bridge, which is a part of Council Bluffs’ ongoing River’s Edge project. Council Bluffs was designated as a Great Place in 2007. Check out the article here: http://www.unomaha.edu/news/features/09/kerrey-bridge.php
Spencer Community Theatre (SCT) breaks ground on a $1.4 million remodeling project. This was one of the components of the successful 2008 Spencer Great Places application.
Over 200 people attended the ground breaking ceremony. SCT was awarded a grant of $85,000 this past July as part of the funding effort for this project. This award, along with other grants from the State of Iowa has been instructional in achieving the fundraising goal.
As Connie Goeken said “Great Places has been very instrumental in assisting this community in leveraging our resources… without the assistance of Great Places this project might not have moved forward.”
