The Great Places proposal of Downtown Sioux City emphasizes the connection the numerous sites and amenities of downtown to create a redefined image of the city’s historic center. A signature bridge designed to improve visual and pedestrian connections between downtown and the Missouri River will increase the accessibility of the riverfront to residents of and visitors to downtown. Renewed interest in historic preservation as a part of the 4th Street Place and the nationally acclaimed Iowa State University Design West projects was proposed to promote and study the unique terra cotta architecture of Downtown Sioux City. Furthermore, as a celebration of the city’s rich agricultural history, the stock yards for which Sioux City was famous, are to be transformed into a strong commercial and industrial center – revitalizing a historically important area in the heart of the city. |
