Charles City’s Great Places proposal is a continuation of the revitalization efforts brought about by the community’s participation in the Main Street Program.  The redevelopment of the riverfront was a way to continue and expand these efforts to the rest of the community by enhancing the Cedar River’s natural features and expanding recreational opportunities in this area – including the creation of a Kayak Rodeo Course. Additionally, a complete trail network will be formed with the construction of additional trails and the restoration of an historic suspension “swinging” bridge over the Cedar River. Furthermore, the childhood home of Carrie Chapman Catt – located in Charles City – will be rehabilitated and used as an educational center to tell about the suffragist’s life and work.
