Iowa Water Trails Grants (IDNR)

The Iowa Water Trails Grant Program was established to help local governments and service organizations to create water trails on rivers, lakes, sloughs, and other waterways in Iowa.  A water trail is defined as an on-water point-to-point travel system with multiple access points featuring a recommended route connecting the points.  $50,000 is currently set aside in grant funding for the establishment of water trail programs.

Economic Development

River Enhancement Community Attraction & Tourism (RECAT) (New Program in FY 2009)

This new program assists communities in the development, creation, and regional marketing of multi-purpose attraction or tourism facilities on or near lakes, rivers, or river corridors.  This program may be applicable to trails which are closely associated with lakes, rivers, or are located within river corridors.  More details will be forthcoming; funding availability begins in Fiscal Year 2009.

Water Recreation Access Cost-Share Program

The IDNR has a cost-sharing grant program called "Water Recreation Access Cost-Share Program" that is available for constructing or improving boat access facilities to Iowa's lakes and streams. Projects can include boat launching ramps, loading/off-loading docks and other structures to enhance use by the public.  Political subdivisions of the State of Iowa may participate in this program. Eligible projects must have a cost-share eligible estimate of $1,000. The application must be submitted and approved prior to expenditure of funds by the local sponsor or it is ineligible for these funds.
